Magistrate ordered IGP to conduct immediate probe
Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage yesterday ordered the Inspector General of Police to conduct an immediate investigation pertaining to the delay in producing (Rs.17,850,000) in cash to Court.
The Magistrate also ordered the Inspector General of Police to appoint the Director of the Special Investigation Unit of the Police Headquarters to investigate the matter and to provide necessary support.
The Magistrate observed that more than three weeks have passed since the protesters handed over this money to the Police but no report or notification has been made by the Fort Police.
The Assistant Superintendent of Colombo Central Crimes Investigation Division handed over the Rs.17.8 million found by protesters inside the President’s House on July 9, before Court.
The Magistrate said while making his order that this Court does not know whether there is a reasonable reason to present a property that has been taken into the custody of the Fort Police through another police.
he Police stated that no complaint has been received regarding this money. The former President had been staying at the President’s House since three months ago and so far it has not been possible to obtain a statement from the former President regarding this money.
