Magistrate orders suspects’ arrest
Colombo Additional Magistrate Harshana Kekunawala yesterday (17) ordered the Fort Police to investigate an alleged incident where Rs. five million from the Currency Issue Vault of the Central Bank (CB) had gone missing and arrest the suspects and produce them in Court.
The Magistrate made this order considering the facts presented to the Court by the Fort Police in relation to a complaint made by S.R. Dayananda, Superintendent of Forensic Finance Department of the Central Bank.
After the complaint made by Dayananda to the Fort Police on April 11, the Fort Police informed the Court that the Police had recorded the statements of six persons working in one department of the Central Bank and that the statements of other persons may be obtained.
Apart from this, the Fort Police reported to the Court that they have deployed officers to the location to conduct investigations related to the incident through fingerprints examination, surveillance evidence and CCTV footage.
The complaint states that 1,000 notes in the Rs.5,000 denomination from a shelf in the underground vaults of the Central Bank building have gone missing. The area is equipped with security cameras with modern technology.
