Magistrate rejects order preventing protest

Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage yesterday (6) rejected a request made by the Fort Police seeking an order preventing a protest staged opposite the President’s House in Fort.

The Fort Police pleaded to issue an order preventing a protest organized by a group of individuals including former Parliamentrian Hirunika Premachandra as it could obstruct the duties of public sector officials.However, the Magistrate denied the Police’s request and instructed the Police to take action under provisions of the Police Ordinance, if protesters behaved in a violent manner.
