The Mahanayaka Theras of the Tri-Sects have made a written request to President Ranil Wickremesinghe seeking a Presidential pardon for Ven. Galagodaatte Gnanasara Thera who is serving a four-year prison sentence for making comments that could harm national and religious harmony.

The letter sent by the Mahanayaka Theras of the Tri-Sects to the President further states, “Ven. Galagodaatte Gnanasara Thera was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment accusing him of acting in a manner that could harm harmony among communities. This was over comments he made to the media during a discussion about the Kuragala Temple in 2016.

“This Thera has been raising his voice about the Sinhala Buddhist identity in Sri Lanka in the past and had also taken steps to inform the Security Forces about some extremist activities in the society. It is no secret that due to this, the Security Forces of the state received support to prevent some extremist forces from spreading in Sri Lankan society.

“It is also not a secret that the activities of Ven. Gnanasara Thera were appreciated by many people in the society and also led to the prevention of massive conflicts between communities in the country.

“Furthermore, it is clear that Ven. Galagodaatte Gnanasara Thera has worked to give necessary recommendations to the government regarding the need to establish a common legal system in the country while holding the position of the head of the President’s Task Force for One Country, One Law.

“In view of the facts, it would be good if the President would kindly pay attention to this matter and on the occasion of the Vesak festival, the President would grant pardon to Ven. Gnanasara Thera.”
