The Mahapola Ports and Maritime Academy (MPMA), a part of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA), has initiated a programme to provide expanded educational opportunities for young individuals.

This initiative has been set in motion under the guidance and instructions of Ports, Shipping, and Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva. The effort aligns with the Government’s decision to direct the youth towards the burgeoning employment prospects within the swiftly advancing port and maritime sectors, driven by modern technology.

Established in 1987 by the late Minister Lalith Athulathmudali, who served as the Ports and Shipping Minister, the Mahapola Ports and Maritime Academy has evolved into a globally recognized institution for higher education under SLPA. Over the years, the institution has been dedicated to imparting knowledge to both port employees and young students pursuing advanced education in navigation, port operations, and the maritime sector.

Under the visionary leadership of Ports, Shipping, and Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva, the MPMA has received directives to introduce new courses that specifically focus on the employment opportunities prevailing in the port and maritime sectors. The aim is to attract and enroll a larger number of young individuals into these programs, providing them with the essential infrastructure and resources. The Minister has granted approval to recruit qualified professionals to deliver these courses effectively. Presently, the academy awards around 2,000 diplomas annually, and the Minister intends to elevate this number by introducing fresh programmes and enhancing the existing ones. A special discussion concerning the implementation of these initiatives took place at the MPMA yesterday (22), initiated by the Minister. Furthermore, the Minister conducted an inspection of the areas where modern infrastructure is slated to be installed and developed within the institution.

SLPA’s Vice Chairman Gayan Algewattege, Managing Director Prabath Jayantha Malavige, MPMA Chief Training Manager Nirmal De Fonseka, and several other senior officials also attended.
