Mahinda clinches Vazian Cricket Sixes

Mahinda College Galle clinched the Vazians Cricket Sixes 2023 by defeating Maliyadeva College Kurunegala by 18 runs in the final played at Sir Albert F Pieris Stadium in Wennappuwa over the weekend.

This two day tournament was conducted by the Old Cricketers Association of St Joseph Vaz College Wennappuwa to commemorate their school’s 90 th anniversary with the participation of 22 leading Cricket playing schools in the island.

After the super knockout round, eight schools qualified for the quarter-finals namely St Thomas College Matara, Maliyadeva College Kurunegala,St Sebastian’s College Katuneriya Mahinda College Galle, Nalanda College, Siri Piyarathana M V, Sri Devananda College Ambalangoda and Devapathiraja M.V Rathgama. During the super knock out round runner-up Maliyadeva College beat hosts St Joseph Vaz College by 4 wickets in a high scoring game while champions Mahinda College defeated Harishchandra M.V Negombo by 2 wickets in another thrilling encounter.

In the first semi-final Maliyadeva defeated St Thomas Matara by one wicket and in the other semi-final Mahinda gained an easy 31 run win over St Sebastian’s College Katuneriya.

In the final Mahinda made a healthy 67/2 in their allotted 5 overs after inviting to bat first thanks mainly to their all rounder Pramesh Madubashana, who scored a quickfire unbeaten 22. Devans were restricted to 49/5 in 4.4 overs.

Pramesh Madubashana of Mahinda College Galle was adjudged player of the tournament.

St Thomas Matara won by 12 runs.

Mahinda won by 11 runs.
