A non-academic staff member and the former principal of Mahinda College, Galle, were further remanded until December 20, when they were produced before court from the remand prison yesterday.

Both had been remanded for allegedly preparing fraudulent documents and embezzling Rs. 2,156, 200 from funds of the School Development Society when they were produced before the Magistrate on December 2.

Hasini Manoji Alahakoon, a Development Officer of the non-academic staff and Pahala Meda Gamage Gamini Jayawardena, a former principal of Mahinda College were the two suspects remanded.

The incumbent principal of the school had lodged a complaint with the Galle Police Special Fraud Investigation Division on October 26 stating that the suspects had allegedly swindled Rs. 2,156,200 from the School Development Society’s funds between 2018 and 2020.

The female suspect was first arrested on November 22 and produced before the court. After receiving the principal’s complaint, the police obtained statements from the treasurer of the School Development Society, two former principals and the person in charge of the maintenance of the school.

The Magistrate ordered that the telephone records of the suspects should be obtained and banned them from overseas travel.

Police also submitted that the respective offence is a punishable offence under the Public Property Act No. 12 of 1982.

Plaintiff’s attorney-at-law Rajindra Narangoda also stated that the School Development Society fund is funded by the Central Government, the Consolidated Fund and the Provincial Council Fund and is being audited by the Government Auditor General.

After considering lengthy submissions by both parties, the Magistrate further remanded the suspects under the Bail Act and stated that the complaint had failed to confirm whether the offence belonged to the Public Property Act.
