Main suspect in alleged kidney racket arrested

The Colombo Crimes Division investigating the alleged kidney racket at a private hospital in Borella yesterday arrested the main dealer from Kajeemawatte in Mutwal.

The suspect Mohammed Bashir alias Mohammed Rajabdeen,41, had left the area recently. He has been arrested based on a tip off received to CCD Unit 2 OIC R.M. Rathnamalala. Five persons including a woman resident in Colombo 15, who had sold a kidney through a broker, had complained to the Borella   Police regarding the alleged kidney racket that was taking place at this hospital.

The Colombo Crimes Division said that it was this broker who had referred these people to complain to the Police, the reason being that he had not been paid the promised amount.

The complaints were referred to the Judicial Medical Officer of the Colombo National Hospital Dr.Ajith Tennakoon for medical investigation.

It has been confirmed that one of their kidneys have been removed.Police information revealed that the Chief Inspector of Police, who was involved in the kidney racket case at a private hospital in Borella, is still working with the blessings of several senior Police officers.

A number of Police officers said that this Police officer, who is attached to the Colombo Fraud Investigation Bureau, was on leave and did not report to work after the kidney racket was revealed, but that now he is working as usual as if nothing happened.

These officers also said that since this Police officer has the protection of several top Police officers, he is not afraid of committing illegal acts.

“Although investigations have revealed that surgeries including kidney transplants are being carried out in this hospital, no information about testicle transplants has been discovered,” the Colombo Crimes Division said.

Meanwhile, the Health Ministry has decided to suspend the organ transplant being conducted at private hospitals around the country after this alleged kidney racked was bared by the media.

The Ministry has also appointed a 7 member Committee to look into this kidney racket.

It has been revealed that kidneys removed from poor people are being transplanted to foreigners.
