Main suspect in Rideegama gang rape arrested after 12 years

Rideegama Police reports that the main suspect involved in the gang-rape of a mentally retarded girl was arrested 12 years after the incident he had fled and been in hiding.

This rape incident had been reported in 2011.

Police arrest the suspect, who is a resident of Karandagolla Meegasthenne under the Rideegama Police area, had fled from the area and had been living in Bulathkohupitiya under a different name, when he was arrested. Police said that the suspect gang-raped an unmarried 34-year-old girl living in Matale Yatawatte area along with four friends who lived in the same village. It is said that they were 24 and 25 years old when they were involved in the incident. At that time, the main suspect, who was also married, had made friends with a young woman residing in Yatawatte area through a phone call that had been randomly received and asked her to come to Ibbagamuwa for a meeting.

The suspect, who did not know that the young woman who was talking to him on the phone was mentally ill, took the young woman to a lodge in the area and gang-raped her with her four friends until dawn the next day. She had returned home the next day and related the incident to her parents. After a complaint filed by them, four youths involved in the rape incident were arrested. Police said that the

main suspect involved in this incident had fled the area and had been living in Bulathkohupitiya for fear of being caught by the police.

The suspect, who had been living under a different name for nearly 12 years, had also performed an illegal marriage. His first wife is childless and the suspect is said to have had a child from the second marriage. Rideegama Police Station OIC, Inspector Hemantha Subasinghe, who resumed the investigation after his appointment as OIC, regarding this rape incident that took place about 12 years ago, had been able to uncover information regarding this suspect through an officer of the State Intelligence Division.
