Man dies in wall collapse due to heavy rain

When Akurana town was under water due to heavy rains, a person died when a side wall of a house collapsed on him.

This accident happened on December 8 at around 10:00 pm.

The deceased was a resident of Kurundugahamula area of Akurana named Mohammad Mohammadu.

According to the Police, the person who was buried in part of the 15-feet-long embankment and under the soil was rescued by local residents in the midst of heavy rain and taken to the hospital, but he was dead on arrival, according to the Police.

The Alawathugoda Police are investigating the incident.

Due to the risk of landslides, 141 people belonging to 31 families in Haldummulla Koslanda Kalpana Wela were taken to safe places yesterday (10).

The Disaster Management Centre said that these people were immediately evacuated after signs of the landslide appeared.

The Department of Meteorology has announced that there may be several periods of rain in the North, North Central and Eastern Provinces today.

The Department said that in other parts of the island, after about 1.00 pm there may be scattered showers or thunderstorms.

The Department of Meteorology said that there may be foggy conditions in the morning in some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern and Uva Provinces.

Also, the Department stated that rain or thundershowers may occur in the offshore areas from Pottuvil through Batticaloa and Trincomalee to Kankesanturai.
