Puttalam Magistrate Mihil Chirantha Sathurusinghe yesterday (10) ordered that a person found guilty of killing an elephant by electrocution should pay Rs.500,000 on the same day and confiscate all the items related to the case.
Kalagiri Devalage Pradeep Kumara, a resident of Pahala Manaveriya area of Puttalam Sellankandhal Grama Niladhari Division, was found guilty of killing an elephant using electrical wires and ordered to pay the fine.
On March 9, 2021, a one-year-old baby elephant was killed on the spot after getting tangled in an illegal power line that the accused had placed on his land.
The Wildlife Veterinarian who conducted the post-mortem examination on the dead elephant at the relevant place had given his report and said that the death occurred due to lung and heart failure as a result of an excessive electric current.
D.Ramasinghe, the wildlife site guard, was present for the case and while presenting the facts before court, said that the accused had provided the electricity he got from his house by
connecting the rig to the power line. The Puttalam Magistrate, who took all the facts submitted, into consideration, declared the accused guilty in the verdict.
