Man gets 36 years’ RI, fine raping underaged in 2008
Hambantota High Court Judge Priyantha Liyanage yesterday charged a 56-year-old person to 36-years’ Rigorous Imprisonment with a fine of Rs.15,000 and a compensation of Rs. 600,000 to the victim over a rape case of an underage girl in 2008.
The convict, H. M. Weerasekara is a father of two.
He had raped his under-aged sister-in-law on several occasion at his house in Kataragama in 2008 making her pregnant while her parents were away for jobs in Colombo.
The rape victim had been in the custody of her elder sister when this crime happened. It was revealed that her elder sister, who is the wife of the convict, had attempted to conceal this crime instead of supporting her to seek the support of the police.
Although, the mother of the rape victim, who was aware of the incident was also hesitant to lodge a complaint with the police over this incident, the elder brother of the victim had informed the incident to the police when they came to know that she is pregnant after a few months after the incident.
He was arrested by the police and charged under three indictments by the Attorney General.
