Man gets life imprisonment for planting bus bomb in 2008

An accused who was found guilty of attempted murder by detonating a bomb in a bus travelling from Mattakkuliya to Moratuwa in 2008, was yesterday sentenced to rigorous life imprisonment by the Colombo High Court.

The second accused in the case was absent from court since the inception of the trial and the case was tried in the absence of the accused under Section 241 of Criminal Procedure.

The accused was also sentenced to rigorous life imprisonment and an open warrant was issued against him by the Colombo High Court.

Following a lengthy trial Colombo High Court Judge Navaratne Marasinghe observed that the prosecution has proved the charges against the accused beyond reasonable doubts.

Accordingly, accused Nagalingam Nadanasekara and Dharmalingam Jayantha were sentenced to life imprisonment by the Colombo High Court.

It is further stated in the judgement that, no loss of life occurred due to the bomb as the bus conductor identified the parcel containing the suspected bomb in the Town Hall area and took immediate safety measures to remove the bus from the Main road.

The Attorney General had filed an indictment against the accused for making a bomb and attempting murder by detonating it in a bus which was travelling from Mattakkuliya to Moratuwa on September 16 in 2008.
