A man who scuffled with the police died when the gun of a policeman went off on the Naula Elahera main road yesterday noon.

The deceased has been identified as Thushara Chandraratne (37) of Naula second milepost.

A spokesman for the Naula Police stated that on information received by the police, two persons who were preparing to travel in a three-wheeler were  interrogated near the second milepost on the Elahera Road. The victim had tried to grab the pistol from one of the officers. The other police officer had ordered him to stop wrestling with the police officer to grab his gun and had even fired in the air, but the suspect had not stopped wrestling the other police officer and had tried to grab his gun. As he had failed to stop his attempt to grab the gun of the police officer, the other police officer had eventually shot him.

Naula Police also said that they had found 14 packets of heroin that were in the possession of the suspect. However, according to a three wheeler owner who was at the scene, W.A. He said that two policemen had arrived on a motorcycle and had checked one of the two persons in the three wheeler and when they were checking the other person, he had refused to allow the police officers to check his pockets. This led to a scuffle between the police officer who was trying to check his pockets and subsequently the other police officer had shot him.

The victim’s mother-in-law Sumanalatha said that he son-in-law supplies sacks to pack vegetables to Dambulla. She said that she was also at the scene when this incident happened, adding that her son-in-law had been on his way to obtain medicine for their pet dogs when this incident happened.
