Bystanders took steps to restrain a man who tried to strangle a constable who was on traffic duty near the Galle Face Roundabout in broad daylight yesterday and hand him over to the Kollupitiya Police.
Police said that while the constable was on duty handling traffic near the roundabout, the suspect who had come from behind put his hand around the officer’s neck and tried to strangle him so that it was difficult for him to breathe.
Several people who were in the vicinity immediately took steps to restrain the man and hand him over to the police.
A senior police officer said that after the suspect was presented for a medical examination, doctors determined that he was mentally unsound due to excessive use of alcohol and drugs.
The 32-year-old suspect, a resident of Balabowa, Devalapola, is to be produced before the court.
