Man who shot woman demanding ransom arrested

A group of Police officers from Avissawella yesterday arrested a man who had shot a woman after his demand for a ransom of Rs.500,000 was refused. The suspect who is also involved in the illicit liquor trade had been arrested with the firearm used for the shooting and a hand grenade. The man is said to come to the 67 year old woman’s house and demanded the ransom.

She had been alone at the house at the time. However she had not opened the door and when she refused he had shot her through a window and some bullet shrapnel had hit her in the abdomen area. She had told the police that she had identified the suspect from his voice.

Laters neighbours had taken her to hospital and she had lodged a complaint with the police there.
