Man who stole ancient bell arrested in Mawathagama
Mawathagama Police officers who conducted an investigation regarding the theft of a Temple bell believed to be more than 250 years old from Weuda Purana Viharaya have found the bell and arrested a person involved in the theft.
Police said the arrested person is a 74-year-old man who is involved in illegal liquor trade and resides in Galagedara. Police say that this temple is a temple with stone caves that have a history dating back to the reign of King Walagamba. Police had found the bell hidden in a jungle area near the temple.
The Police say that the connection of the illegal liquor dealer to the theft of the bell was revealed during the investigation and he was arrested. This bell weighs about 80 kg and the year 1767 is written on it. Police also said that they are seeking assistance from the Department of Archaeology to obtain a report regarding the ancient value of this bell.
The suspect was to be produced before the Pilassa Court. The Police say that further investigations are underway to arrest the other suspects involved in this theft.
