Man who stole Lester’s trophy arrested in Kandy for another theft

The person involved in the theft of the Golden Peacock Award, which was awarded to Dr. Lester

James Peries for directing the film Gamperaliya at the New Delhi Film Festival, was arrested by the police on August 21 afternoon when he entered the Perahara area of Kandy and attempted to steal a wallet.

Police said the 71-year-old suspect is a previously reported notorious criminal. On the day of the last rites of Dr. Lester James Peries, this award was stolen by the suspect, when a large number of people gathered at his house and after the Police conducted investigations and identified him, he was arrested and brought before court. When a large number of people had come to Kandy on August 21 for the first Kumbal Perehara, the suspect entered the Perehara route and had stolen the purse from a woman’s bag. Police arrested him with the help of bystanders.

Police deployed vehicles equipped with CCTV cameras in the city to identify whether criminals who have been reported to the Police Crimes Division roam around in Kandy during the Perahara season. The suspect is a resident of the Gampola area and investigations are being conducted under the leadership of Kandy Police Crime Division OIC Chief Inspector Naleen Indika.
