The Colombo Fraud Investigation Bureau (CFIB) officers arrested a person who allegedly swindled more than Rs.30 million from several people after promising he will obtain student visas for them to study in Canada and Australia.
He had been running a bogus educational consultancy agency in Colombo according to sources. Police said he had been running this racket since 2010 and 33 people have filed complaints against him in various police stations. According to the complaints so far the amount defrauded by the suspect is said to be around Rs.30 to 40 million.
The Fraud Investigation Bureau stated that this person, who does not have a permanent home, but hides at various locations from time to time, was arrested while hiding in a house at Bodhiraja Mawatha in Maligawatte. Police are conducting further investigations.
