Man with travel ban flees country, detained in Mumbai
A 45-year-old man who managed to flee from the country despite a travel ban imposed by courts against him was detained on a flight bound for India and deported after landing in Mumbai yesterday.
The Point Pedro and Mallakam Magistrate Courts had issued two foreign travel bans against the suspect from Jaffna.
However, on Tuesday night (29) he had managed to sneak through the Immigration and Emigration counters at the departure terminal and board a flight bound for Mumbai.
An Australian lady waiting for clearance at the Immigration and Emigration counter who noticed a passenger sneaking past the counter had informed the officers. The officers had later identified the passenger from the CCTV recordings and had come to know about the travel bans after perusing the computerised details of his passport and airline ticket.
Since the flight had already entered the Indian air space the Immigration and Emigration officers informed the pilot and the Operations Manager in the Mumbai airport about the particular passenger.
He had been arrested at the Mumbai airport and deported to Sri Lanka and handed over to the Immigration and Emigration officers. It is said that he had a fake seal of the Immigration and Emigration Department stamped on his passport. The Immigration and Emigration officers have handed over the suspect to the CID for further investigations.
