It has been revealed during the audit conducted by the National Audit Office that last year, that the Matale Municipal Council has lost Rs.993,641 due to the non-issuance of licences for industries and trade establishments operating within Municipality limits.
The audit report stated that 698 organisations have been identified for granting trade licences by the Municipal Council, but licences had been issued to only 616 of them and Rs.431,641 in revenue had been lost due to non-issuance of licenses to 82 organizations. In the industry survey, 1,464 business establishments have been identified and it has been revealed that licences have not been issued for 162 businesses and the loss of income to the Council is Rs.562,000. It has been mentioned in the audit report that disaster loans, festival advances and special advances of 34 officers who have been transferred, retired and suspended during one to five years have not been collected and the total amount is Rs.2,638,155.
It has also been revealed in the audit that the Municipal Council has not provided answers to 10 audit queries and that the calculated value of the transactions that were the result of the queries is Rs.227,080,827.
A copy of the annual audit report has also been forwarded to Central Province Governor Lalith Gamage.
