St. Thomas’ College, Matale, past cricketers came forward to uplift cricket at St. Thomas’ College, Matale. Many past cricketers who captained The College’s first XI cricket teams gathered at school premises while past cricket captains of College commissioned a forum as Thomians’ past Cricketers Wing to uplift the game of cricket at STC.
The College Principal, Dhammika Hewawasam who always gives his support to promote the sports extended his blessings and recognition to this newly formed Cricket Wing. As an old Thomian and a past cricketer, Principal Hewawasam has also played under a few of the past cricket captains who were gathered at this event. Special coaching session by Sri Lanka Army coaching Unit headed by former Sri Lankan spinner Ajantha Mendis was very successful while social seminar for Sprit of the game and rules and regulations of the tournaments with cricket laws were very important things done by the cricket wing. In addition awards ceremony for under 19 semi-finalists gave more encouragement to the young cricketers.
These former STC cricketers sprang into action in no time. Their list of action plans to uplift their beloved sport in their beloved school included Motivational workshops for under-19 cricketers covering topics including team building, leadership, and decision making, with the able guidance and assistance of retired Colonel of Sri Lanka Army, Wasantha Pamunuwa; a distinguished Old Thomian, former captain of College first XI cricket team in 1970.
Adding more to these plans, the Cricket wing also arranged five practice games with leading schools in Kandy and Anuradhapura, creating space for young cricketers in College to gather experience and practice their skills. Moreover, to give some confidence and to boost their morale, Cricket Wing also gave away two playing kits to each player in the under 19 Cricket.
At this gathering, the past cricketers expressed their commitment to support the young players and College cricket.
To appreciate their excellent performance and great effort, the Cricket Wing arranged a ceremony to recognize all these young Thomians, towards the end of the tournament season.
Though STC was beaten at the semifinal match last year in the DIV II Tournament, it’s important to note that the entire tournament was a great success, compared to previous years. This year and in the years to come, the cricket wing support will continue towards the game and the school to get forwards. In addition cricket wing also work hard for the college ground development which is more important for all sports.
