In the process of removing the causes of the blocks
The Matara Irrigation Office has started a programme to dislodge the obstructing driftwood, dead branches and dry twigs that are entangled at the base of bridges and around embankments built around the waterways including the Nilwala River in Matara district.
The programme was implemented with the aim of mitigating the calamities that may occur with the bad weather conditions that have affected the Matara district.
Residents on both sides of the Nilwala River say that despite the continued rain, the water in the Nilwala River is flowing rapidly and it looks like a flood situation would be averted.
All things considered, obstacles were removed near the Siyambalagoda Bridge, from near the Diyalape weir of Digili Oya and further obstructions were cleared near the Wellethota Bridge.
Taking into account, that due to barriers in some of the places, the water would not be channelled properly, the agricultural activities in the 2024 Yala season could be hindered and the disasters that may occur with the monsoon rains may intensify, therefore the obstructions were noted and removed.
Doing this, they worked by utilising the machines and staff of the Irrigation Office.
