Mathews timed out in a first in international cricket history
Sri Lanka’s most experienced batsman Angelo Mathews was timed out in a first for international cricket during the World Cup clash against Bangladesh at the Arun Jaitley International Cricket Stadium in Delhi yesterday.
The player was unhappy with the strap on his helmet, and not ready to face his first delivery after coming in at No. 6 for Sri Lanka during the match.
Mathews was timed out as he took more than two minutes to face the next ball after Sadeera Samarawickrama’s dismissal. Sadeera was out at 3.49 pm (local time), while Matthews was timed out at 3.54 pm and this decision was given after the matter was referred to third umpire Nitin Menon (India).
According to the men’s cricket World Cup 2023 playing rules, “After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless time has been called, be ready to receive the ball or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within two minutes of the dismissal or retirement.”
If the batsman fails to do so, he will be considered out.
However Mathews’ dismissal was highly criticized by most of the cricket experts as the opponent team skipper Shakib Al Hasan appealed to get Mathews’ wicket.
In cricket history, way back in 2006/2007, South African skipper Graham Smith did not appeal for a ‘timed out’ when Indian Sachin Tendulkar was late to get to the batting crease in their test match played in Newlands, South Africa.
