Measles-rubella vaccination programme in 12 districts

0 3

Amid rising concerns over the resurgence of measles in Sri Lanka, the Health Ministry has launched a measles-rubella vaccination programme in 12 targeted districts. The campaign, set to run for four weeks from November 8, aims to curb the spread of the disease, which had previously been eradicated in the country.

A series of public awareness programmes took place from November 4 to November 9, focusing on educating the public about the vaccination initiative.

The campaign particularly targets the 20-30 age group, while also ensuring that others who missed previous vaccinations are immunized.

The Health Ministry advices the public to check with their local Medical Officer of Health (MOH) for vaccination dates and participate in the programme. Health officials warn that a single measles patient could potentially infect 10 to 18 other individuals through airborne transmission.

Despite Sri Lanka’s prior success in eliminating measles, cases have re-emerged since 2023, highlighting the need for renewed vaccination efforts. According to Dr. Athula Liyanapathirana of the Epidemiology Unit, anyone who has missed a full dose or received only one shot will be prioritized for vaccination. He also noted that, given the disease’s spread in other Asian countries, Sri Lanka is vulnerable to an outbreak.

The Ministry emphasizes the importance of this preventive measure to control and contain measles, safeguarding public health.
