The Director General of the Animal Production and Health Department, Dr. Hemali Kothalawala, stated that the Animal Production and Health Department and the private sector have implemented a joint programme to provide necessary vaccinations for the control of LSD among the cows that has been reported in Nuwara Eliya district.

The Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industries, Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera instructed the Director General of APAH to take necessary measures to control this disease.

The minister also inquired about the spread of these diseases.

This disease was also reported from Jaffna a few months ago and the vaccination of the cattle was started so that the disease could be controlled.

Also, if the number of vaccines currently available for the control of this disease is not sufficient, measures will be taken to purchase them under the emergency purchasing, said the Secretary of the Ministry Mr. Janaka Dharmakirthi.

This condition poses no threat to human health. Mrs. Dr. Hemali Kothalawala stated that the consumption of milk and meat from cows infected with LSD does not cause any health problems and there is no risk of this disease affecting humans.

The LSD among the cow causes no harm other than economic loss to dairy farmers. Due to cow LSD dairy cows suffer from fever and due to this, the daily amount of milk in these cows decreases.

However, it has been reported that 135 cattle have died in the Central Province due to cow measles in a period of 06 months, according to the Department of Animal Production and Health.

Dr. Hemali Kothalawala has emphasized that there is no need to create undue fear regarding this disease and there is no risk of LSD spreading from sick cows to humans.
