A discussion for media professionals on ‘Addressing Hate Speech through Education’ was held at the Press Complaints Commission of Sri Lanka premises, on Wednesday (20) in conjunction with International Peace Day which was held yesterday (21). The Sri Lanka Press Complaints Commission, Arigatou International, Sri Lanka National Commission for UNESCO and Hashtag Generation organized the discussion.
Addressing hate speech through education has the potential to build more inclusive societies, foster respectful dialogue, and reduce the prevalence of hate speech, it was discussed. By examining challenges and opportunities, strategies that educators, policymakers, the media and the public can collectively use to combat hate speech were also discussed. The panellists were Hashtag Generation Head of Advocacy Saritha Irugalbandara, Irida Lankadeepa Editor Kanchana Dassanayake, Consultant, UNESCO Category II Jayantha Waththavidana, while the moderator was Convener, Free Media Movement (FMM) Lasantha de Silva.
Journalists and experts in the field of education participated in the discussion.
