Media should be ethical when publishing election news – Saliya Pieris, PC
Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) former President Saliya Pieris, PC, said that print and electronic media in the country should follow media ethics and guidelines when publishing or telecasting news related to the forthcoming Presidential Election.
The former BASL President made these remarks at a well-attended seminar on the ‘Role of Media and Law in Sri Lanka’s Electoral Landscape’, conducted by the Sri Lanka Press Association (SLPA) at the BASL auditorium, Colombo. SLPA President Kurulu Kariyakarawana and General Secretary Thilak Senanayake presided.
Pieris said the media has lots of responsibilities when broadcasting or publishing news during this crucial election period. “Every media person should write or telecast accurate news without tarnishing the personal image of anybody,” he said.
He said the forthcoming Presidential Election is more important than any other previous presidential or parliamentary elections on the grounds that this year’s Presidential Election is held two years after a peaceful struggle organized by several groups.
Pieris said that decisions made by the Supreme Court cannot be challenged by anybody and such decisions must be respected by all. It is also the duty of the media to publish and broadcast decisions made by the Judiciary correctly.
