The Health Ministry Secretary has instructed health officials in flood affected areas to provide medical assistance to people at relief camps.
A special disaster relief programme has been implemented by the Disaster Management Unit of the Health Ministry on the advice of Health Ministry Secretary Dr. Palitha Mahipala to provide necessary health facilities and other facilities to the affected people.
A discussion was held at the Health Ministry under the chairmanship of Dr. Palitha Mahipala to monitor the progress of the programme on Tuesday (4).
Medical officers and regional health directors in the areas that have been in a state of emergency and representatives from the World Health Organisation and UNICEF also participated in this discussion via zoom technology.
The Health Ministry Secretary instructed the officials to go to the relief camps and make inquiries about the health condition of the people and give them the necessary treatment.
Dr. Mahipala also informed that a health staff led by doctors from the nearest main hospitals in the disaster-affected areas would constantly refer to the displaced camps and provide the necessary assistance.
He also advised that the medicines given for rat fever should be given to those areas without shortage and necessary steps should be taken to clean and chlorinate the flooded wells.
While emphasising that everyone should work with great dedication to control and suppress any future epidemics, the Secretary instructed the officials to pay their fullest attention to ensure the safety and cleanliness of food provided to the flood victims and also the sanitary facilities.
The Health Ministry Secretary also advised the officials to pay attention to the health safety of pregnant mothers, young children and the elderly. He also stressed that there may be an increase in the spread of dengue mosquitoes, so it was advised to implement a special programme to control it.
The Health Ministry Secretary also inquired about the problems faced by the officials who provide health services in those areas.
Health Services DG, Dr. Asela Gunawardena and a group of doctors including Deputy DG and Health Ministry Directors also participated.
