Men’s and Veteran divisions will be key attractions at ‘Eva’ Netball tourney

Open men’s event will be the key attraction of the ‘Eva’ All Island open Netball tournament conducted by Western Province Netball Association which scheduled to be held at January 13-14 at Air Force grounds , Colombo 02.

This will be the 67th tournament while for the 27th consecutive time ICL Brands ( Pvt) Ltd came forward as main sponsor, said President of the Western Province Netball Association Sandya Rajapaksa.

It’s a huge achievement from our Association and once again four divisions will be worked off in this two day event added President Sandya Rajapaksa.

‘A’ division open men’s and open women’s are the main events while we also promote men’s Netball through this tournament. ‘Netball Queen’ and ‘Netball King’ are the highest awards of this tournament.

The B division will only have Open Women’s while schools division will include under 15 (born on or before January 1, 2009) under 17 (born on or before January 1, 2007) and under 19 (both on or before January 1, 2005) events and this time more schools are expected to participate.

The veteran’ s division over 40 women’s (born on or before December 31, 1983) also will be a key attraction, said Tournament Secretary Nimalika Thushsnthika. She further added only 12 players and three officials could be registered for a team and no entry fees for the school teams. The entries will close on January 5 with a the Secretary Soraya Fajudeen of Amal ‘1512 Zone 6, Millennium City, Athutugiriya and more details can be obtained from Tel.no.0769122778.

The entry forms could be collected from the tournament secretary Nimalika Thushsnthika of 46/20/1, Gamunu Road Wattala (phone 0761717286) or the Secretary Soraya Fajudeen. The draw will be held on January 10 at the Sports School, Independence Avenue Colombo 7 (near the Sri Lanka Football Association) at 5pm .

Anil de Silva the Corporate Director of Capital Maharaja Group said they are very keen to give their sponsorship through ICL Brands (Pvt) Ltd and this time the best players of each category of schools events will receive Netball equipment bag for the requirements of one year while they will look after these girls to develop their skills. In addition they have an idea to give live TV telecast at finals of this tournament, said Corporate Director Anil de Silva .

Last year Sri Lanka Air Force and United SC emerged ‘A’ division women’s and men’s champions while Kotalawala Defence University won the’ B ‘division women’s title.

Speedbirds SC and Police SC were veterans joint champions while Holy Family Convent Kurunegala bagged girls under 19, 17 and under 15 titles. Chinthaka Nuwan from United SC was adjudged Netball King while Rashmi Divyanjali of Sri Lanka Air Force was named Netball Queen last year.
