State Transport Minister Dilum Amunugama said that he has signed the Gazette Notification to make meters which display charges for three-wheelers compulsory from January.

This law which will come into effect from January 1, 2022 will be made compulsory for the Western Province. This law will be made effective countrywide in three months and after that three-wheelers on hire without a meter will be taken into custody and laws for this purpose will be enacted.

Amunugama made this comment while speaking to the media subsequent to a function held after launching the ‘Park and Ride’ bus service at Kandy Railway Station recently.

He said that even though the Gazette Notification making compulsory all three-wheelers to be transformed into meter taxis has been signed, it has not been issued as yet, until three-wheeler association representatives are informed regarding this programme.

He emphasized the fact that today, there are instances where drivers of certain three-wheelers which do not have meters, charge the public unfair amounts and many complaints are being received regarding this. Hence, both parties were taken into consideration when this decision was made, the state minister said and mentioned that the objective was to provide a trustworthy as well as quality service to the people.
