MIG purchases: Udayanga gives CID statement

Former Sri Lankan Ambassador to Russia Udayanga Weeratunge appeared before the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to record a statement over the controversial MIG fighter jets deal yesterday.

Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage on Saturday (13) ordered Weeratunge to record a statement with the CID in connection with this case.

The Attorney who appeared on behalf of Weeratunge requested Court on Saturday to relax the travel ban imposed on his client, for him to participate in an event to be held in Russia. However, the CID raised strong objections against this request, after which the Magistrate dismissed the request and ordered Udayanga Weeratunge to record a statement with the CID. The former Ambassador arrived at the CID around 10.30 in the morning and left after about three hours.
