Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera has instructed the Agriculture Secretary to give him a report on whether internationally banned pesticides are being used in Sri Lanka.

The Environmental Justice Centre has recently revealed that 40 types of pesticides, including internationally banned insecticides and herbicides, are being used in Sri Lanka.

Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera, instructed the Agriculture Ministry Secretary Gunadasa Samarasinghe, to give him a report on it as soon as possible.

He also emphasized that in an inquiry made by the Agriculture Ministry in this regard, the Pesticide Registrar has not given approval for the use of internationally banned pesticides in this country, and if the Environmental Justice Centre says that the relevant report is given, they can investigate it.

The sale, distribution or use of pesticides banned by the Pesticide Registrar Secretariat is prohibited in the country and the Pesticides Registrar Secretariat has been empowered to take action against any person who violates the same.
