Agriculture and Plantation Industries Minister Mahinda Amaraweera instructed officials Tuesday (14) to speed up the development projects planned for this year under the Agriculture and Plantation Industries Ministry, as the relevant Presidential Election gazette is to be issued in July.

The Parliamentary Advisory Committee of the Agriculture and Plantation Industry Ministry was held at the Parliamentary Committee Hall on Tuesday (14). A large number of Parliamentarians participated in this discussion and the Ministry officials were also present.

The Minister also said: “After publication of the gazette for the Presidential Election, no development work can be carried out. Due to this, development projects will not be allowed to be implemented after July until the end of the Presidential Elections. I have stated this in the Ministry’s progress review meetings since the beginning of this year. But still cannot be satisfied with the implementation of some development projects.

The Government has provided sufficient financial allocations for it. But it seems that some sectors have not even completed the initial work yet. The Minister informed the officials to work hard and take measures to give the people the benefits of the development projects”. The Minister also mentioned that the Cabinet has approved the Youth Agri Entrepreneurship Village Programme implemented by the Agriculture and Plantation Industries Ministry in all 25 districts. One hundred and sixty villages have been selected for this and Rs.1,600 million have been allocated for the project. The Minister also stated that Rs.10 million have been allocated to each village under the first phase.
