Minister issues orders for flood control in Galle, Matara and Ratnapura districts

Irrigation and Wildlife and Forest Conservation Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi said that people in the districts of Galle and Matara as well as Ratnapura are threatened by floods during the rainy season and their lives are severely affected due to this.

Accordingly, as a solution to the Galle and Matara flood problem, the Irrigation Minister advised the Irrigation Department officials to pay special attention to the implementation of the Gin Nilwala flood control project. She also advised officials to implement a special project to carry water from Dela, Wey Ganga, Malwala Dam, Kukule Ganga to Udawalawa Reservoirs for flood control in the Ratnapura district.

The Minister instructed relevant officials to give priority to these two projects and implement them promptly in 2024. These facts were revealed in a discussion held on Wednesday (20) at the Irrigation Department auditorium on the preparation of the irrigation work plan for 2024.

In addition, the Minister instructed the officials to focus on the implementation of the Kitulwela Irrigation Project to solve the water problem of the people of the Batticaloa district and the Kumbukkan Oya Reservoir Project to solve the water problem of the Moneragala district for 2024. Minister Wanniarachchi said that Rs. 30 billion has been allocated to the Irrigation Department and asked the officials to quickly prepare plans by identifying the priorities in the implementation of the projects next year.

Also, the Minister said that the officials are responsible for the prevention of the damage to the environment and wildlife as much as possible during the implementation of projects carried out by various ministries and departments including irrigation projects.

Minister Wanniarachchi added that next year is the year aimed at uplifting the agriculture industry and the local farmers, the Irrigation Department is an institution that has to play a big role in this.

Secretary of the Ministry of Irrigation, U.D.D. Jayalal, Director General of Irrigation Department Engr. I.P.A. Gunasekara and many officials of ministries and departments participated.
