Minister Rambukwella gives voluntary statement to aid probe on drug issue

Former Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella voluntarily gave a statement to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) yesterday (26) regarding the questionable medicinal drug issue.

Issuing a statement, the Minister’s media unit stated that the information being spread that the CID had questioned Minister Rambukwella on the controversial drug issue was completely false.

Police media spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said that at the request of the former Health Minister, the Police went to his residence in Colombo and recorded his statement. Dr. Sanjaya Perera, who worked as an adviser to the Minister, submitted the first complaint regarding the questionable drug incident as per the instructions of Minister Rambukwella.

As certain groups and individuals are spreading false information while hiding this fact, the Minister felt that it was necessary to provide written and other evidence to support the relevant investigations.

On the instructions of Minister Rambukwella, U.R. De Silva PC had made a written request to the CID Director DIG Prasad Ranasinghe that the Minister is willing to give a voluntary statement in this regard to assist in the investigation.

U.R. De Silva PC, in his letter to the CID Director, has stated that his client the Minister had extensively investigated the fraudulent manner in which the first suspect in this case acted during the controversial drug purchase issue and how he made a false claim that the relevant drug was produced in India and such information can be given to assist in the relevant investigations.

Also the De Silva stated that the videos of meetings the Minister had with other suspects to question on the drug purchase issue, relevant documents seeking information on the first suspect, documents related to stopping the drug purchase immediately as soon as he came to know about the issue, can assist in the investigations.

He further stated that a threatening email sent by the first suspect to the Minister too can be submitted and his client has informed the Attorney General about the situation and asked for assistance.
