The Ministry of Agriculture is considering the restriction of the importation of seeds of seven locally produced crops next year.
It was revealed at a discussion held at the Ministry of Agriculture yesterday (13) under the patronage of the Minister of Agriculture Mahindananda Aluthgamage that the program to produce seeds of six crops namely Potato, Onion, Chilli, Red Onion, Undu, Maize and Peanut in the country has already achieved successful results.
Nawalapitiya Aluthgama Chili Seed Production Village has already produced 1500 kilos of hybrid seeds and is currently producing B onion seeds at Dambulla Digampathana farms. Meanwhile, it was revealed that potato seeds are being produced at the Nuwara Eliya Government Farm.
It was also pointed out that the import of seeds for these crops could be restricted before the end of next year as red onion undu, groundnut and maize seeds are also being produced successfully.
Director-General of Agriculture Dr. Ajantha de Silva, who participated in the discussion, said that the import of chillies could be stopped by 2024 and the import of potatoes and onions could be restricted to 35 percent and 30 percent respectively.
