Ministry obtains Rs. 5.6 Bn from Treasury for settling payments for drugs

Health Minister Dr. Ramesh Pathirana said that an amount of Rs. 5.6 billion was allocated from the Treasury to settle essential payments for supply of medicines.

He expressed these views while joining a special conference held yesterday (27) at Narahenpita National Blood Transfusion Centre with the aim of identifying the problems existing in hospitals and health institutions under the purview of the Health Ministry and providing prompt solutions to them.

The Minister also said that after sending a memorandum to the Cabinet to obtain additional provisions for the supply of medicines for the next two months, the necessary provisions will be made.

He stated that he will work with the Treasury to settle all the outstanding bills of the government hospitals, and that he will devote himself to the best of his ability for the progress of the health service.

Minister Pathirana also said that he expects support from all officials to successfully fulfil these initiatives.

The main focus was given to important facts

including the shortage of doctors, nurses and other staff in the main hospitals as well as regional hospitals, the shortage of drugs in the hospitals, solving problems by managing funds in the face of the current economic crisis, the new data system ‘Swasta’, the methods to be taken to control the spread of dengue mosquitoes and identifying the spread of mosquitoes and taking measures to control it, the next steps to be taken regarding the nutrition of mothers and children, the improvement of primary health services, the possibility of assigning staff for medical staff headed by doctors for training and work in foreign countries.

It was also decided to provide short-term and long-term solutions to those problems. It was also decided to take note of the progress of the solutions to the problems in a future conference.

Provincial Health Service Directors, Hospital Directors, District Health Service Directors, Directors of Health Institutions, Medical Superintendents, Chief Medical Officers, Regional Health Medical Officers and a group including Health Ministry Secretary Janaka Chandragupta and Health Service Director Dr. Asela Gunawardena participated in this conference.
