Mobile vehicles warn people not to fly kites near airports
The Airport Authorities say that a mobile vehicle has been deployed to inform people to avoid flying kites in the area around the Ratmalana, Katunayake and Mattala Airports as it may cause accidents to passenger planes.
A spokesman said that in accordance with Section 248 of the Ceylon Air Navigation Regulations, 1955 Act, if a kite or any other object is flown in close proximity to airports, there must be a written approval from the Civil Aviation Authority.
According to the Aviation Act, it is prohibited to fly kites and other objects at a height of 300 feet or more within a radius of five kilometres of the airports.
The spokesman said the nylon threads used to fly kites pose a great danger to aircraft.
Stating that the above mentioned laws and regulations have been imposed for the safety of airplanes, he said that some use ropes to fly kites and this has created a very dangerous situation.
