Monk remanded after social media ‘theatrics’

A Sri Lankan monk claiming that his name is ‘Sri Vishva Buddha’ who came from the universe has been arrested for making various disrespectful statements related to Buddhism on social media. The social media video posts shared by the monk appearing in them dressed in casual wear contain verbal content deemed as disrespectful to Buddhism and dishonouring the religion.

These videos shared by the alleged monk caused a major stir on social media which led to a complaint being lodged against him with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID). Based on the complaint filed with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), the monk was arrested in Kalagedihena in the Gampaha District on Tuesday (12) evening.

The arrested monk has been identified as a 34-year-old resident of Ratnapura. He was produced before the Fort Magistrate’s Court yesterday (13) by the Criminal Investigations Department and remanded till December 9.
