Agriculture and Plantation Industry Minister Mahinda Amaraweera advised the Chairman of the two Government-owned fertilizer companies, Dr. Jagath Perera, to declare the maximum price at which MOP Fertilizer (Muriate of Potash) can be sold as Rs. 9,000.
A review discussion was held on Tuesday (12) at the Agriculture Ministry about all the available amounts of fertilizers for the 2023 Maha Season. Agriculture and Plantation Industry Ministry Secretary Janaka Dharmakeerthi, Dr. Jagath Perera and National Fertilizer Secretariat Director Chandana Lokuhewage and other officials participated.
At present, 27,000 metric tons of MOP fertilizers are available at the two Government-owned fertilizer companies and urea fertilizer has also been given to all farmer service centres.
For this reason, arrangements have been made to sell a bundle of urea fertilizer and MOP fertilizer at Rs. 9,000 and Minister Amaraweera advised Dr. Jagath Perera to name the prices for MOP fertilizer as the maximum retail price that can be sold.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the two Government-owned fertilizer companies said that the demand for high-quality organic fertilizers has increased in this Maha Season, which was not seen in the previous cropping seasons.
In addition to the two fertilizer companies, it has been reported that the farmers are buying more of the high quality organic fertilizers sold by the private sector this Maha Season.
Encouraging farmers to use high quality organic fertilizers as a very good trend, the Minister also mentioned that it is essential to apply organic fertilizers as well as chemical fertilizers according to a certain percentage for a successful harvest.
