More details have emerged regarding the fatal shooting of a restaurant owner in Kalutara South, with police investigating a possible dispute involving an alleged underworld figure.

The 54-year-old restaurant owner, identified as Sampath, a resident of Dodangoda, was shot dead outside his restaurant in the Gallassa area of Kalutara South on Friday (Oct. 9). His wife sustained serious injuries and was admitted to Nagoda Hospital.

Police said the attack was carried out by a gunman who arrived on a motorcycle and opened fire using a T-56 assault rifle. Investigators believe the gunman continued firing until the ammunition in the weapon’s magazine was exhausted.

According to police, the deceased had previously faced allegations in connection with a murder committed several years ago. He had also suffered impaired vision following an acid attack.

Investigators have received information suggesting that the victim may have been involved in money laundering activities linked to an underworld figure.

Police said the deceased had previously maintained close ties with a suspected underworld figure, but a dispute had reportedly developed between them.

The dispute is believed to have arisen after the alleged criminal requested a room at the victim’s restaurant for gambling activities.

Police are investigating whether the shooting was ordered by the suspected underworld figure. However, the exact motive for the killing has not yet been established.

The gunman fled the scene following the attack, and further investigations are underway. (Newswire)
