
More people around the world now turn to social media and video platforms for news than traditional media outlets, according to the Reuters Institute Digital News Report 2026.
Based on online surveys of nearly 100,000 people across 48 countries, the report found that 54% of respondents access news through social media and video-sharing platforms.
The findings highlight a continuing shift in news consumption habits, with audiences increasingly relying on platforms such as social media networks, video services and content creators for information and updates.
Researchers said the trend is particularly pronounced among younger audiences, who are more likely to consume news through videos, influencers and online personalities rather than traditional news websites, television or newspapers.
The report also noted the growing role of creators and independent publishers in shaping public understanding of current events, while raising concerns about misinformation and the challenge of verifying information shared online.
