Most in SJB will support President at poll – Range

United National Party (UNP) General Secretary Palitha Range Bandara yesterday denied Samagi Jana Balawegaya’s (SJB) claims that he had made statements regarding a group of SJB MPs joining the UNP at the May Day rally held at Maligawatta. Addressing media at Sirikotha, the UNP headquarters the General Secretary said however, the UNP believes that all the SJB MPs except a few including MP Nalin Bandara who are with Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa will support the UNP at the upcoming Presidential Election.

He said that all the major political parties at their May Day rallies revealed their readiness to the Presidential Election. It indicates that they have no issue with holding the election, he added.

Responding to the speeches made by the SJB and the National People’s Power (NPP) at their May Day rallies, Range Bandara said what Opposition Leader Premadasa promised to do after becoming the President has already been done by the UNP leader, President Ranil Wickremesinghe. Therefore, Premadasa has nothing new to do. As well, although the NPP declared their plans and programme for the country after forming a government, they did not clearly mention their candidate for the Presidential Election, he added. “Accordingly, what is left to be done by everyone is to support President Wickremesinghe to carry forward his programme. This opportunity is open for any political party,” he further said. The General Secretary also said that the May Day rally organised by the UNP at Maligawatta was a successful one and he is proud of that.
