Mother, daughter mowed down by speeding lorry in Vavuniya

A mother and daughter who were waiting for a bus on the side of the road in, Parayanalankulam, Kannatti in Vavuniya were killed on the spot when they were knocked down by a lorry.

This incident had happened yesterday (16) at around 7 am. Sivalokanathan Subokini (36)

and her 6-year-old daughter Dinusika, residents of Kannatti are the deceased.

Both of them had been waiting for the bus, on the road in front of the house to go to Poovarasankulam school from Kannatti area. Police investigations have revealed that the truck which had been speeding from Vavuniya towards Mannar had veered off the road and run over the mother and daughter, standing on the side of the road, killing them.

Eyewitnesses of the accident said that another boy who had seen the truck speeding towards them had run away and escaped the accident.

One of the three people traveling in the truck had run away after the accident, while the other two had been caught by the villagers and handed over to the police.

After the accident, the public attacked the canter, damaged it and tried to burn it. Due to this, there was unrest in the area for a while and traffic on the Mannar road was also disrupted for a while. The police had reached the spot and brought the situation under control. The Parayanalankulam police have commenced investigations into the accident.
