Mother who sold teen daughter for sex remanded

Minuwangoda Acting Magistrate Athula Gunasekera ordered yesterday (11) to remand a mother who sold her 14-year-old daughter for sex till August 11. Two suspects who sexually abused

this girl were also remanded until August 22. The 43-year-old mother of four, a resident of Welagaana, Divulapitiya who was produced in court on the accusation of having sold her daughter for sex was remanded thus.Two persons who sexually abused this girl aged 14 years, were also remanded. One person

involved in this was a resident of Ullalapola, Divulapitiya aged 52 years named Koralege Gunawardena and the other person was Sisira Bandara (42). The police said that the 52-year-old suspect was a labourer who earned daily wages while the other person was an owner of a tyre shop.

The female suspect and the two male suspects were screened at the Negombo General Hospital for venereal diseases. The court ordered the Negombo Prisons Supervisor to obtain a report and present it in court on August 22.

The girl who was a victim of this sexual abuse hospitalized for medical tests and the court ordered the Divulapitiya police to admit the child to the Children’s Care Center in Negombo until the report from probation is received.

It was stated in court that, a special team of police officers including Officer-In-Charge of the

Divulapitiya Police Chief Inspector Chandrasiri Hiriyadeniya, is carrying out investigations in order to arrest other suspects based on the statements of the victim, the underaged girl.

The girl’s father is dead and the suspect who is a mother of four is bringing men to her house and charging Rs. 2000 from each person, and getting her daughter to have sexual relations with them.

This had been revealed during police investigations and it confirmed that the daughter had been sexually abused in the home itself. This information was submitted in court by Sub- Inspector Subasinghe and Police Constable.Bandara (81532) while explaining facts of the case.

The police also told the court that it was revealed during investigations that the suspect, who brings people into the house when there is no one at home, puts the person and her daughter inside the house, shuts the doors and stands guard.

The Acting Magistrate Athula Gunasekera ordered the police to conduct further investigations and immediately arrest the suspects who subjected the child to sexual molestation and to present the progress of the investigations on 22 August in court.
