Motorists using Kandy Hospital premises to avoid city traffic hampering hospital activities – Director
A survey has revealed that out of the 6,000 vehicles that enter the Kandy National Hospital premises daily, only 2,000 vehicles come for the needs of the hospital and the patients.
According to the survey conducted by the hospital staff, it has also been revealed that around 4,000 vehicles use the road through the hospital as an alternative way to avoid the traffic jam.
Kandy National Hospital director, Iresha Fernando revealed this information while presenting the facts before the Kandy Development Coordination Committee.
The director said that according to the survey done by the hospital staff, around 700 motorists use this road between 6.00 – 7.00 a.m. and between 7.00 – 8.00 a.m., the number increases to around 1,300 vehicles.
Fernando said that there is a similar traffic jam in the afternoon when schools and offices end and that on average, about 6,000 vehicles pass through the Kandy National Hospital every day and a majority of them are three-wheelers. She said that due to this traffic jam, sometimes the ambulances carrying patients as well as normal vehicles get into heavy traffic on the hospital road and there is a possibility that a patient who needs emergency treatment may even die due to this delay.
The director also stated that some motorists travelling from the Hantana area to William Gopallawa Mawatha use the road running through the hospital as a short alternative route.
She also said that when there is heavy traffic in the city, some drivers use the road through the hospital as an alternative route.
The director also said that this situation is a big hindrance to the hospital’s administrative work and at times there have even been clashes between the hospital security and some drivers.
After considering the facts presented, committee chairman, MP Gunathilaka Rajapaksa, advised the Kandy Senior Superintendent of Police, Anuruddha Bandaranaike, to take the necessary measures to stop other vehicles from entering the hospital premises.
