0 24

Colombo Chief Magistrate Prasanna Alwis yesterday (21) ordered the release of Member of Parliament Wimal Weerawansa, who had been issued a warrant, and warned that if he avoids the

court again, the bail will be cancelled and he will be remanded and then only the case will be taken up for hearing.

Wimal Weerawansa, who submitted a motion to the court through a lawyer, was strongly warned and released on bail. Warrants were issued on June 19, by the court for the arrest of the MP due to his failure to appear

in court for the trial related to the allegation of holding a protest by blocking the roads against the visit of the United Nations High Commissioner Prince Zaid Al-Hussain to Sri Lanka. In 2016, when the then United Nations Human Rights Commissioner Prince Zaid Al-Hussain visited Sri Lanka, the Cinnamon Gardens Police filed this case in court against several defendants, as well as MP Wimal Weerawansa, stating that they caused public oppression by blocking the roads and protesting in front of the United Nations office in Colombo.
