MSD PC interdicted over shooting in Kataragama
A MSD Police Constable who had fired shots at a house in Kataragama has been arrested and interdicted. Kataragama Police arrested him and his friend along with a T56 firearm, on Tuesday (29) night after they had gone to a house in Kataragama with their faces masked and shot at a 25-year-old youth who was in that house.
The investigation carried out has revealed that the firearm that was used in the shooting belongs to the Police Department and had been given to the relevant PC by the Ministerial Security Division to provide protection to an MP from Moneragala.
The investigation has revealed that this Police Constable went to the house on a motorcycle, called the young man by his name and shot him as he was coming out of the house.
The investigation revealed that the young man had escaped by running away. Investigations have also revealed that two shots had been fired from the T-56 weapon. A senior Police officer said that along with the T56 weapon, two magazines of 30 rounds each and one magazine of 28 rounds were taken into custody.
This Police constable had been deployed to protect a Moneragaladistrict MP. Police said that the PC is a resident of Kataragama. Investigations have revealed that he had come on leave from Moneragala and returned home without handing over the firearm to the nearest Police station, as required.
Police said that a friend of this constable owns a hotel at Kataragama Lunugamwehera Junction. During investigations it had become apparent that there had been a dispute between the owner of the hotel, the constable and the person who was shot at, a few days ago. According to the Police the shooting was done by the Police constable based on that incident. It had been found that he had gone to carry out the shooting with his friend, the hotel owner.
A Ministerial Security Division officer said yesterday (30) that based on this incident, steps were taken to interdict this PC.
