A bag containing the duty firearm and uniform of a Police sergeant attached to the Ministerial Security Division (MSD) has been stolen in Pettah, while the Police officer was sleeping near a shop in a state of intoxication.
According to the Pettah Police, the MSD Police sergeant had been assigned to provide security to Member of Parliament Mohammad Muzammil.
The Pettah Police said that the MP wanted to go to his house in Matale and told the sergeant that he would go to Matale on December 8. Due to a problem regarding space in the MP’s vehicle, he told the sergeant to go to his house in Matale after finishing his duties on December 7.
Accordingly, this sergeant finished his duties on the 7th and came to board a bus to Matale with his uniform, civilian clothes, the duty firearm, a pistol, two magazines containing 24 rounds of ammunition, weapon storage, magazine storage and other necessary items in his bag.
It is said that he met a friend who is also a police officer in Pettah and had gone to the Junior Police Officers mess to drink alcohol.
Later this sergeant had gone to find a bus, leaving his friend behind. As he was in a state of intoxication and was feeling sleepy he had taken a nap near a shop in Pettah.
He had told the Pettah Police that he had fallen asleep and when he woke up he had found his bag missing.
The Police have launched an investigation while perusing the nearby CCTV cameras to find the bag.
Meanwhile, the MSD higher authorities have taken measures to suspend the sergeant on disciplinary grounds.
